CPAC DAY 2

16 Mar

Driving to the Gaylord during the days of CPAC is likened to making the pilgrimage to the conservative Mecca a potpourri of people sharing one thing or two- the cause and the Ten Commandments. An article hit the wires a few days before about what to wear when seeing and being seen… heels, heels and more heels and lots of hair. There is the divide between the old and the young- the older women wear flats and the younger women wear 6″ heels that will one day they will regret when not approved by Obamacare.

There is too much going on for one to appreciate the burgeoning conservative movement that did not collapse after the presidential candidate called Romney. CPAC is the return to life for candidates- some failed, some moved on. Donald Trump

The Faith and Freedom coalitions Prayer breakfast brought together pillars of Judeo Christian tradition. Heads bowed short of a skullcap or two, one could not tell the difference except the difference between man and mensch, Hebrew for a good man with  an empathetic heart. Prayers were offered forward by every guest to the dias, forward in that the prayer for a renewed Republican Party are escalating as hope for a new day is revived. The quiet conversation whispered behind hands adress Mitt Romney’s failed run for the Presidency. Congressmen, pastors and people shared croissants, fruit platters, eggs and bacon. And friendship. And promises. Tomorrow is a new day. Pray.

It seems the most fun with Trump were the jokes at his expense in the Potomac Ballroom hours after he left the room. This time it wasn’t Elvis leaving the building. Trumps jokes at his expense go after the news of his life he keeps public or is public- bankruptcies, wives, bankruptcies and the old New York joke how does The Donald make a million? His father gives him 10 million. he Donald isn’t shy. he billed himself it he program as Donal Tump, Chairman and President, The Trump Organization/Founder, Trump Entertainment Resorts.
Truth in advertising. a few weeks shy The Donald’s casino in Jersey went for pennies on the casino dollars machine.

Traffic clogs the hallways in between main stage speakers and panels. Anyone who knows hallways and people knows that heel to toe traffic can be negotiated quickly with taps on shoulders and ‘excuse me, excuse me, excuse me.’ Conservatives like Dems know the language of cueing. Independents and entrepreneurs know the language of doing. Paul Ryan’s moment on stage was a rise from the ashes of the failed Romney Ryan ticket. Ryan’s budget is back, front and center of conservative politics again.

Movies played throughout the day. A movie many looked forward to was preceded by Rick Santorum who stood front and center sharing he  was at CPAC having traveled from Pittsburgh. His nephew died. life as experienced is framed with gifts such as these- life and love. Santorum is back being dad to Bella and his other children. There are bills to be paid. And campaigning debts to pay off even with the philanthropy of Foster Friess launching his new Left Right Left Right Forward campaign. The line for invited lunch went around the corner and then sum. Cupcake, salad, wrap mad soup and Q and A. Rick had showed up albeit late. Karen’s not pleased with the thought of another run he said. But for America? He isn’t ruling the run out. A parent, a Dem who advocated for Obama, crossed party lines to share her advocacy for disabled charging both parties are equally negligent to this immunity. No one defers to her past politics. She isn’t the only one crossing from left to right. At this well attended conference, more than just rhetoric blurred.

Michele Bachman appeared in her traditional white, mother of 23 foster children and 5 of her own. Michele was billed out as a speaker not as a presenter of an award to a 20 plus blogger who still lived at home. Ever the mother, Michele made a mom note of being out on her own.

Writers headed panels on how to write and get published. Media was railed at every opportunity. Think talks talked about what they’d thought ‘is observation alive or dead or still rolling over.’ NRA’s Wayne La Pierrre knew that walking on to main stage in itself was a sound byte that will repeat time and again. Like a three ring circus on four levels in dozens of rooms with book signings, pizza for students, and lots of recommendations of how to put Humpty Dumpty America together again.

Mitt Romney was anticipated tepidly. Feelings are still hurting from the sting of a loss in a campaign that many feel was stolen after devoting hours into on the ground work, call banking and donations all for naught for a candidate whose son later said his dad didn’t want to run, his mother and brother did. Mitt   Cold have taught America to fish. He didn’t. So America voted for the man who promised to give them fish for their lives. Congressman Bobby Jindal shared his jokes at the President delivered at the Gridiron roast delivered by that skinny Indian man from 7 eleven, land of the Slurrpy.

The talk that Barbara Walter’s The View is replacing Elisabeth Hasselbeck their conservative, prompted conservative gossip that Congressman Sean Duffy ‘s Real World Wife, mother of six/ conservative and Latina kept the stage patter going. The panel of women dredged on old topic once more through the dirt ‘do women earn less than men.’ Not in the experience of the women in typing range. Claws came out discussing heel height, hair height, body language and clothes befitting a pageant queen. Seems the men enjoy the rivalry women . The Internet Panel consisted of wonks and agendas rather than focusing on loss of livelihood most suffer

Even patriots poop out

The miracle of day was by sundown. The pilgrimage to the renaissance hotel ,
was across the walkway to the second gathering of the conservative Jews for the Sabbath dinner. What was a gathering of 25 or so Jews the year before when the convention was held at the Woodley Marriott, was now well over a hundred and the room kept filling. Last years unannounced visitor was Grover Norquest and Arab American wife. This years unexpected guest was Colonel Allen West and his wife, a Brooklyn girl, a Queen amongst Conservatives. The princess of Conservative Jewish circles was a young girl born of African American and Jewish parents expressing a desire to enter politics.

The food, kosher, was driven down from Brooklyn New York. In a way, it was old home week for members of Emet, the RJC, and Jews from everywhere brought together by the tradition of Sabbath, Shabbat. The world of politics stayed outside the room for the moments of prayer and the moments of tribute to Jewish tradition and to conservative hero Andrew Breitbart. Chicagoan Andrew Morton shared personal moments with the man he tracked for two years videographing a compilation of hate against a misunderstood former lib with a teddy bear heart, Andrew Breitbart. Not everyone knew Andrew was Jewish- practicing? Well yes even if he thought no. The precept of Judaism is how man treats man. Andrew told the story of Breitbart schooling Jewish liberals that the home they exited the woman who lived there funded and pushed the flotilla escapade against Israel, moments caught in Hating Breitbart.

The world of politics from across the street filtered in slowly but surely. What was at stake was greater than most choose to discuss- religious freedoms which are being chopped way at by the current administration. Every Jew in that room knew the cost of religious persecution. Sixty years isn’t that long ago to forget family members slaughtered when they did not fight back. In that memory, they came to stand with America at CPAC.

Hear O Israel, our Lord is One but our country is divided…
